چکیده

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. It is likely caused by a complex interplay between genetic, immunologic and environmental factors. Although IBD is still relatively uncommon in Asia, a multitude of studies have shown that it is an emerging disease around the world. Recent insights have highlighted both the similarities and differences amongst Asian and Western IBD patients. Summary: The annual incidence of IBD in the East is still low compared with the West, but there are differences between different regions of Asia. Time trend studies have shown that the incidence of IBD is on the rise. Some notable differences in the clinical manifestations of IBD between the East and West have also been noted. ‘Westernization’ of lifestyle may encompass various social and environmental changes that account for the emergence of IBD in our population, although genetics also plays a role in disease pathogenesis. Diagnosis and treatment challenges include limited access to medical care in certain areas, limited availability and high cost of Received: March 6, 2016 Accepted: May 6, 2016 Published online: July 15, 2016 Siew C. Epidemiology of intrafamilial inflammatory bowel disease throughout Europe

The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have distinctly changed over the past decades throughout Europe. From former North-South and West-East risk gradients, nowadays, classic high-risk areas for IBD in North and West present more stable incidences whereas in formerly low-risk zones the incidence is rising. These changes cannot be explained by genetic modifications in ...

Identification of diagnostic biomarkers by bioinformatics analysis in the inflamed and non-inflamed intestinal mucosa in Crohn\'s disease patients

Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which despite the unknown details is generally related to genetic, immune system, and environmental factors. In this study, we identify transcriptional signatures in patients with CD and then explain the potential molecular mechanisms in inflamed and non-inflamed intestinal mucosa in these patients. Materials and Me...

The association between NFKB1 -94ATTG ins/del and NFKB1A -826C/T genetic variations and coronary artery disease risk

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is considered as a chronic inflammatory disease initiated from early childhood. Nuclear factor κB (NF κB) and κB1A (NF κB1A) are the key regulators of inflammatory responses. The NFKB1 -94ATTG ins/del and NFKB1A -826C/T polymorphisms may contribute to the development of CAD.  The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of these polymorphisms wit...
